NATO should address issues of counter-terrorism, instead of strengthening the military presence on the border with Russia, while no anti-terrorism plan of the Alliance did not work, said Wednesday the official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova Russian journalists in Madrid.

«The military of Spain to the Baltic States — it does not matter to Russia, and to Spain, as Spain needs it, how it is in the interests of this country,» the diplomat said, answering a question about the accommodation of the Spanish contingent stationed in Latvia, the integration unit of the NATO forces.

Integration division of NATO forces in Latvia was established on September 1, 2015, and its main task is to coordinate the rapid deployment of NATO forces high readiness, including promoting the deployment of allied forces in Latvia. Spain became the twelfth country to officially confirm its participation. The unit also involves Latvia (as the host country provides about 50% of the personnel division), Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Turkey, UK, USA.

«I want to ask a question to Spaniards: ever of Spain, the Spanish people defend themselves against Russia? Unless Russia threatens the security of Spain? No. But Spain is threatened by international terrorism. But for some reason NATO does not consider it necessary to protect Spain against terrorism. I have not heard about any specific action and no specific plan to combat international terrorism by NATO, which would successfully work,» she said.

In her words, «organization, which proclaimed as its goal the cooperation and Euro-Atlantic security, that security is not engaged» but engaged in imaginary, virtual threats. This approach, according to the official representative the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation leads to a situation where «international attention is diverted from real threats, real threats are replaced by imaginary threats.»

«Instead of trying to unite and stand together against ISIS (the terrorist group «Islamic state» banned in Russia – ed.), international terrorism, we are trying to divide, coming up with mythical stories about the Russian hackers who allegedly interfering in the elections», — said the representative office.

Thus, according to her, Moscow «highly appreciates the dialogue with Spain,» which «is not interrupted even in the presence of some complex issues.»
