Painting by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat sold at Sotheby’s in new York for the 110.5 million dollars, setting a record price for the works native Brooklyn.

The huge canvas (1.73 to 1.83 meters) untitled portrays a black head on a blue background.

As reported by Agence France-Presse, for the painting was a bitter struggle between those present in the auction room by the client and the purchaser are traded on the phone and in the end prevailed.

The auction house said that the painting was acquired by the Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku of Maezawa, which set the previous record price for the artist’s work, paying last year, 57.3 million dollars for his self-portrait.

Basquiat started as a graffiti artist and later famous for his works in the style of neo-expressionism. He died in 1988 of a drug overdose at the age of 27 years.
