The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill has called Nicholas the Wonderworker, whose relics on Sunday for the first time brought to Russia from Italy, the most revered Saint in the country.

«The Saint and miracle-worker Nicholas, in terms of popular veneration in Russia was and remains the early saints. Almost all the houses both in the past and in many homes of Orthodox people today have three icons: the Savior, the mother of God and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker», — the Patriarch said on Sunday in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which brought the ark with the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

According to him, this worship is connected with many miracles in people’s lives through the prayers to this Saint, «the deliverance of the Fatherland and our people from many historic catastrophes.»

«That is why the Russian flock is the flock, filled with great love for the Holy Hierarch and Wonderworker Nicholas. That’s why in our minds it is perceived as a Russian Saint, though he never was in Russia and not by nationality or culture have never been associated with our country», — said the Patriarch.

He stressed that today the very necessary presence of St. Nicholas, «not only in our people preserved faith, but also to eternal divine truth did not leave the modern life».

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church said that an agreement on the presenting part of the relics of Italy were reached on the results of his historic meeting with Pope Francis on February 12, 2016. Addressing those present in the Church Catholic Archbishop of Bari, Francesco’s Cacucci, he thanked the Catholic Church for giving the Russians the opportunity to venerate the relics of St. Nicholas.
