Of the relics of Saint Nicholas from the Italian city of Bari to Russia indicates «privileged status of the relations» between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, said the Archbishop of Bari, Francesco’s Cacucci at a meeting with Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill.

The meeting, which is held in the chambers of the temple of Christ the Savior, involves the DECR Chairman Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Archbishop of Bari, Apostolic Nuncio to the Russian Federation Archbishop Celestino Millor, mayor of Bari Antonio Dekaro, representatives of the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches.

According to Catucci, of the relics of Saint in Russia is «a unique event since the separation of the Churches». He noted that Pope Francis also frequently in communication with him stressed «the importance of this event, calling it unique.»

«Almost every day we get requests that we shared relic – the relics of Saint Nicholas, so what happened — the transfer of the relics to Russia — makes clear and shows a certain privileged status of our relations to the Russian Orthodox Church and personally to you, your Holiness,» said Kikuchi, referring to Patriarch Kirill.

The agreement on the part of the bringing of the relics of St. Nicholas was reached at the historic meeting of Patriarch Kirill with Pope Francis February 12, 2016. Until 12 July the relics will be placed in Moscow, and from 13 July to 28 July, they will be held in Saint-Petersburg.
