The President of South Sudan Salva Kiir on Monday announced the introduction of the ceasefire unilaterally and promised to release political prisoners, reports Reuters.

«I have instructed the Prosecutor General to immediately review the cases of those who committed crimes against the state known as political prisoners, and to ensure the implementation of necessary measures for their release. I also announce the introduction of the ceasefire unilaterally, which takes effect today,» said Kiir.

South Sudan, in 2011 seceded from Sudan in 2013 is in a state of civil war between representing the nation Dink authorities headed by President Salva Kiir and opposition. More than two million people were displaced. In August 2015 the parties failed to sign a peace agreement, but clashes broke out again less than a year.
