Russia on Wednesday celebrated the Day of Slavic writing and culture, festive concerts will be held across the country, Muscovites will be able to see the ancient books, and in the Crimea will hear the hymn to Cyril and Methodius.

The day of Slavic writing and culture, dedicated to the Day of memory of saints Cyril and Methodius, who created the Russian alphabet and gave rise to a literature of the Slavs. Traditionally, the holiday is celebrated on may 24. On this day, nationwide concerts, and also hosts various events dedicated to this date. In this year of Slavic writing executed 1154.

The main festive concert will take place on red square. At the time of the meeting will be held live broadcasts from Belgorod, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. The event was opened by welcoming speech of Patriarch Kirill.

As reported on the website of the Moscow mayor, the program will include spiritual works of Alexander Kastalsky and Peter Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev and Sviridov, popular songs of the Soviet authors, and will host a concert of Polina Gagarina. Festive events dedicated to the Day of Slavic writing and culture will be held in other regions of Russia. So, in the Crimea on this day, on the steps of the government of the Republic by a large choir of the best children’s and adult choral ensembles, a performance which begins with a solemn hymn to Cyril and Methodius.

According to the official website of the mayor of Moscow, also on Wednesday in the reading room of Turgenev will open an exhibition of ancient Slavonic books and manuscripts will show the archive materials of XVI-XIX centuries from the private collection of Maxim Byvsheva. Visitors will see two handwritten books of the reign of Ivan the terrible, and also get to know the certificates on which the signatures of opponents of the representatives of the Rurik dynasty, for example, Stephen Bathory and Wladislaw IV. At the exhibition visitors will see the unique collection of old believers, which helped to detect previously unknown local autographs first half of the eighteenth century.

THE NAME DAY OF PATRIARCH KIRILL

On Wednesday morning at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour Patriarch Kirill will lead the divine Liturgy. As expected, he will concelebrate with the clergy of the city of Moscow, and also representatives of local Orthodox churches. After the service they all congratulated the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church with the day of tezoimenitstva.

This year the Patriarch of Moscow has urged the clergy not to give him flowers on the occasion of the name day, as is usually the case. Instead the savings will go to help war victims in Syria.
