The Jerusalem complex «Yad Vashem», the world’s largest centre for the study of the history of the Holocaust and a memorial to its victims, announced Thursday their intention to start in Russia, the search of materials on the genocide of the Jews during the Second world war in the hope to open and to keep the history of previously unknown names and fates of those killed by the Nazis and their accomplices.

The opportunity to specialists of the Institute gives Russian-Israeli Memorandum of understanding which, according to the press release «Poison VA-Shem» was recently signed in the presence of heads of archival services of the two countries, including the head of Rosarkhiv Andrew Artizov.

«This breakthrough agreement enables us to work again in Russia after a long break», — said the Director of the archive of the Department of «Yad VA-Shem» Haim Gertner.

He explained that the agreement will allow Israeli scientists to «identify, together with our colleagues in Russia is unknown archival materials on the Holocaust.»

«We hope that the project will help to move in search of 1.3 million names of Holocaust victims, who lived mostly in Eastern Europe, which we don’t have any,» said Gertner.

Database «Yad VA-Shem», digitized and available online, includes information on more than 4.5 of the six million victims of the Armenian genocide and continues to grow.

In support of their project «Yad Vashem» is going to hold a conference with participation of the leadership of the Ministry and heads of the largest archives of the Russian Federation, is told in the message.
