Russian Orthodox and Coptic churches are discussing the possibility of bringing to Russia from Egypt the relics of one of the founders of monasticism, said on Monday RIA Novosti press-Secretary of the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia priest Alexander Volkov.

«We sent a proposal to the Coptic Church, and now this issue is being addressed,» said Volkov.

He said that Patriarch Kirill discussed this issue with the Coptic Patriarch Tawadros II. Also, this question was raised during a meeting last Sunday at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Primate of the ROC with the delegation of the monastic clergy of the Coptic Church. «The Patriarch reiterated our readiness and desire of the Russian Church to the relics of one of the founders of Egyptian monasticism was brought to the Russian Orthodox Church», — said Volkov.

At the meeting with the delegation of the Coptic monks, the Patriarch drew attention to the fact that now the Italian city of Bari to Moscow brought the relics of St. Nicholas. «Maybe you’ve seen those queues of people who stand to venerate the relics. After the tour, our group of monks to Egypt for you (November 2016 – ed.) there was one idea that I would like to share with you. This idea of bringing to Russia the relics of one of the founders of Egyptian monasticism,» — said the Patriarch, quoted by the Patriarchal press service.

The Coptic delegation arrived in Moscow to commit a pilgrimage to the Orthodox monasteries of Russia in accordance with the decision of Patriarch Kirill and Tawadros II. This trip is a reciprocal visit in November of last year the delegation of the Russian Church made a pilgrimage to Christian shrines of Egypt.

Christian monasticism originated in Egypt, approximately in III–IV centuries. The founders of the monastic tradition are saints Anthony the Great, Pachomius the Great, Macarius the Great.
