A political scientist and a supporter of a tough line against Russia Uess Mitchell could become the assistant Secretary on Affairs of Europe and Eurasia, said portal BuzzFeed with reference to sources familiar with the situation.

Mitchell is the co-founder of the expert Centre for the analysis of European policy (CEPE), in the past worked in the neo-conservative think-tank John Hay Initiative.

Assistant Secretary on Affairs of Europe and Eurasia is engaged in particular relations with Russia. In the previous Obama administration, this position was occupied by Victoria Nuland, after her resignation, the post remains vacant.

BuzzFeed claims that Nuland and former coordinator of the state Department on sanctions Daniel fried was considered the property of trump for the post of special envoy in the negotiations with Russia over Ukraine, but withdrew his candidacy. Nuland in the past negotiated settlement of the crisis in Ukraine with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov.

Overall, as BuzzFeed notes, the current administration lacks experts on Russia in leadership positions. In addition to relevant vacant positions in the state Department, the Pentagon does not put forward the candidacy of the Deputy assistant Secretary of defense for Russia. The Secretary of state Rex Tillerson, who as head of the oil company ExxonMobil was doing business with Russia and repeatedly visited it, is considered an expert on Russian Affairs, said the portal.
