The United States in connection with the anniversaries of the deaths of journalists Paul Klebnikov and Natalia Estemirova urged the Russian government «to protect all its citizens in accordance with international law.»

«We praise the efforts of brave journalists and human rights defenders who write about corruption and human rights violations, and urge the Russian government to protect all its citizens in accordance with (rules of) international law», — reads the statement of the official representative of US state Department on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the murder of Klebnikov and the eighth anniversary of the death of Estemirova.

The state Department noted that in both cases, neither the performers nor the customers of the crimes were not brought to justice.

Chief editor of the Russian edition of «Forbes» magazine, the 41-year-old Paul (Paul) Khlebnikov was shot dead in Moscow on 9 July 2004. The murder took place two natives of Chechnya — Musa Vakhaev and Kazbek Dukuzov, and also the Moscow notary fail Sadretdinov. A jury in may 2006 the Moscow city court fully acquitted the defendants, they were released from custody. The Prosecutor General’s office appealed this decision, and in November 2006, the Supreme court overturned the acquittal.

An employee of the center «memorial», winner of many prominent human rights awards Natalia Estemirova was kidnapped in Grozny on 15 July 2009, the same day her body was found in Ingushetia. In July 2013, the representative of the Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin said that the motive for the murder of Estemirova, according to the investigation, was revenge for its publication of recruitment by Alkhazur by Pashaevym militants and the attack on the family of a Moscow businessman. He Bashaev was declared in the international search.

The state Department annually sends to Moscow’s calls to find the perpetrators of these crimes.
