. Biologists from the Institute of theoretical and experimental Biophysics RAS found that glucose «hunger strike» helps the brain cells to deal with epileptic seizures, Alzheimer’s disease and the effects of severe head injuries, the press service of ITEB RAS.

«For the first year of the project we plan to investigate the violations and their compensation immediately after the injury, at first or third day. In the future we will try to explore the consequences of violations occurring throughout the year,» says Anton Malkov from the Institute of theoretical and experimental biology, Russian Academy of Sciences in Pushchino.

Fry and his colleagues for several years studying how different brain injuries and violations in his work lead to the development of epileptic seizures and other serious problems almost untreatable.

Last year, Russian scientists conducted an interesting experiment in which they demonstrated that epileptic seizures occur if the nerve cell has not enough of glucose. The development of such seizures biologists have been able to suppress, using the so-called pyruvic acid, the product of decomposition of sugars.

The appearance of large quantities of this acid causes the nerve cell to consider that she’s not getting enough food, and puts it in a mode «energy saving», which prevents the development of epileptic seizures, during which the neurons burn a lot of energy. Similar to the results of experiment, as noted by Fry, forced his team to assume that something similar may occur in the development of neurodegenerative diseases or the appearance of severe brain injuries.

Fry and his colleagues checked whether this is actually experimenting on mice suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. When scientists injected into the brain of sick mice pyruvic acid, insulin, and antioxidants, they found that this combination of drugs inhibits the electrophysiological and cognitive disorders in the early stages of the disease, and have markedly affects the brain in the later stages of the disease.

The beneficial effects of this set of substances the scientists associated with the fact that the cells changed from 100% glucose «diet» on the oxidation of pyruvate and other metabolic products that helped them to deal with the lack of energy associated with impaired blood flow and other problems in blood vessels of the brain. The result of the mouse feel better, they have been hyperexcitability, convulsions, and they are better oriented in the world.

In the near future, biologists from ITEB plan to conduct similar experiments on other mice suffering from serious brain injuries, chronic Alzheimer’s disease and effects of strokes. According to the press service of the ITEB, the project has found support from the Russian science Foundation, grant for the first year of its implementation 3.9 million rubles.
