To Whittaker, which will be the thirteenth Doctor in the longest-running series in the history, this role was played by men only. In January 2017 Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, who played the Doctor in 2013, has announced that he is leaving the project.

The series about the alien traveler in time and space Doctor Who first appeared on screens in 1963. It is listed in the Guinness Book of records as the most successful and longest running science-fiction series.
