A fragment of the meteorite that fell in Chelyabinsk region in 2013, were stolen from the Chelyabinsk Museum where it was stored, have informed on Tuesday a press-service UFSB across the region. The stolen fragment was later found in a private collection of geologist.

«At the beginning of July to the FSB of Russia in the Chelyabinsk region appealed to the leadership of the state historical Museum of the southern Urals with the statement for loss from the vaults of a fragment of the meteorite that fell in 2013 on the territory of the region. As a result of operative-investigative activities, counterintelligence managed to establish the whereabouts of the piece, weighing about 2.5 kilograms. He discovered in the private collection of geologist who provided consulting services to the Museum,» — said in the message.

The market value of one kilogram of a meteorite that is part of the Museum Fund of the Russian Federation, according to the Museum staff, is more than 1 million rubles, the report States. Currently solves a question on excitation of criminal case.

The meteorite at supersonic speed and a bright flash of light flew over the territory of the Chelyabinsk region on 15 February 2013 at 9:22 local time (7:22 GMT). 3 hours 20 minutes 26 seconds GMT was observed impulse with magnitude 4 about a kilometer southwest from the center of Chelyabinsk. On Earth, this event was observed as a powerful explosion. The shock wave from the meteorite, later named «Chelyabinsk», damaged buildings and knocked out a set of glasses, more than 1.6 thousand people were injured.

Scientists collected fragments of the meteorite. Their chemical analysis showed that it is an ordinary chondrite of the type LL5 is one of the types of stone meteorites. The weight of the largest fragment of the Chelyabinsk meteorite made 503,3 pounds.

The results of the study of meteorite fragments, scientists of Institute of Geochemistry and analytical chemistry named after Vernadsky RAS stated that a space object that fell near Chelyabinsk, once split off from the relatively large asteroid.
