The exhibition «the Scythians: warriors of ancient Siberia» opens on Thursday at London’s British Museum. Director of the St. Petersburg State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky sees it as, among other things, more «elegant way to talk about the Russian revolution.»

«Russian festival in London»

The exhibition, for which the Hermitage Museum has presented more than 200 exhibits will tell about all main aspects of life of the Scythian tribes living on the vast territory of modern South Russia, the Northern part of the Black sea to China.

The lack of written evidence about the life of the Scythians compensated for the fact that due to cold climate has preserved a large number of artifacts. They talk about the Scythians, their lifestyle, diet,, about tattoos that decorated their bodies, both men and women, on the funeral rituals. The Scythians were skilled warriors, skilled horsemen, craftsmen and jewelers.

«Many people have heard about the Scythians, but have no idea what it stands for. We hope that this exhibition will be a discovery: they will see real people, real objects that existed long dominated over a vast area. The Scythians it is not only the soldiers, it is civilization as a whole: just look at the jewelry, embroidery», — told RIA Novosti curator of the exhibition Dr. John Simpson.
Among the most unusual exhibits — ornate bag with cheese, which age exceeds 2 thousand years, human body parts with tattoos, masks for horses, a device for Smoking cannabis.

«I wouldn’t say that people know little about the Scythians. We do exhibitions about the Scythians approximately every two years in different parts of the world. But the Scythians absolutely not represented in the collections of Britain. This particular exhibition is notable for the fact that everything goes to Siberia because Siberia all began. Gold things are put up often, know them, and things from the excavations of Siberian, Altai tribes – they really do not know, and that all the results of the research. Tattoo here just recently were discovered in the infrared,» Piotrovsky told RIA Novosti.

«All the time are new studies, they are complicated because the local population does not allow more digging in the upper Altai, and many places are closed for archaeologists. This exhibition is a living archaeological research, live excavations, and the enormous people who invented a lot and played a huge role in history,» said Director of the Hermitage.

«This is a very elegantly made Russian holiday in London has always been inherent to the British Museum in good taste. The whole exposition on the verge here – computer stuff, pictures, music, but this line is not crossed, all with very good taste made. Multimedia with a very deep scientific blend very well,» says Piotrowski.

«Our exhibition is a way to show the triumph of Russian science and archaeology,» — said in turn, Simpson.

The Director of the Hermitage said that in the preparation of the exhibition it is no less fundamental point than its scientific content, was the mythopoetic image of the Scythians, is very important for Russia.

«It is very important to us-poetic way, and in General is the matrix of all life in Russia. The Scythians are famous, above all, the Scythian way of waging war: to retreat in depth, and then to turn at the right moment and strike. So they fought with the Persians, so Russia is fighting all my life – with the poles, Swedes, French, Germans, and now, during the «cold war» is a turn back» — smiling, said Piotrovsky.

He added that the exhibition has a double symbolic meaning: first, it occurs in the period of political tension between Britain and Russia, and secondly — in the year of the 100th anniversary of the Russian revolution.

«First, the exhibition is held now, when the political relations are very bad. And this is a situation when museums have to preserve those bridges, which need to be preserved. It is important that they are maintained, although the politicians sometimes want these bridges quickly to destroy» — said the Director of the Hermitage.

«The second is a neat way to tell about the Russian revolution. Scythians is a revolutionary force that broke into the settled areas of the Middle East and the steppes of North Pontic. It’s the people who really gave a lot to world development, from the Scythian arrows to pants, and more. It is a reminder that in the depths of Russia a lot of interesting stories lurking», — said Piotrovsky.

The exhibition «the Scythians: warriors of ancient Siberia» will run until 14 January 2018.
