To build a new sewage treatment plant on lake Baikal cheaper than upgrading the old one, said at the opening of the Baikal water forum, the Governor of Irkutsk region Sergey Levchenko.

Baikal international eco water forum started on 14 September the work in Irkutsk. Its main task was seen the solution of environmental problems of lake Baikal, especially in the study and application of advanced wastewater technologies.

«We plan during a forum to explore all modern world technologies in the field of water treatment and to choose the most advanced. Our task is to find the option that will allow after wastewater treatment to water of the same quality which has the Baikal water to use,» — said at a press briefing, the Governor of Irkutsk region Sergey Levchenko.

Today on the lake there are 32 wastewater treatment facilities, almost all of them obsolete. According to Levchenko, upgrade them doesn’t make sense. «We will build new ones, to deal with alteration of existing not economical», — said the head of the region.

On the forum it is planned to sign a number of important from the point of view of nature conservation of lake Baikal agreements with representatives of the foreign company. In particular, we are talking about creation in the city of Usolye-Siberian plant for the processing of recyclables.

The forum will run for two days. Business program of the forum includes plenary sessions, panel discussions, round tables, presentations, business meetings. The government of the Irkutsk region also has already held its first plenary meeting of the international Association lake regions, which should begin its work after the forum.
