Moscow expects progress in the bilateral dialogue with Berlin after the German election, said the Director of the third European Department of Russian foreign Ministry Sergei Nechaev.

Elections to the Bundestag, the results of which the new government is formed and appointed the Chancellor, will be held in Germany on September 24.

«Let’s be optimistic. We have always believed, and believe that good-neighbourly relations between our countries there is no alternative and that these relations are strategic in nature. Their status in Europe and the world depends very much. The longer they stay frozen, the more unresolved issues, the harder it will be to get them on the same level», — he said in an interview to «Kommersant», answering the question of whether it is possible to expect progress in the bilateral dialogue after the elections in Germany.

According to Nechaeva, Russia will respect the choice of the Germans and will work with the new government of Germany in the interests of the peoples. «It is time to seek the return of our traditional cooperation on the strategic track. We are ready,» — said the Russian diplomat.

He said that Moscow hopes for resumption of the mechanism of interstate consultations at the level of heads of state. «It is difficult for us to judge because we were not the initiators of it freezing. But we hope that sooner or later it will happen,» said Nechayev.

The diplomat said that while the restored work of the interdepartmental working group on strategic cooperation in Economics and Finance resume activities of sub-working groups of the high level group on the security policy.

«In parallel, we have intensive consultation process between the ministries of foreign Affairs, between regions, between members of the public — suffice it to recall the «Petersburg dialogue» or «Potsdam meeting». I hope that gradually we get back to the original format of intergovernmental consultations,» — said the Director of the third European Department of the foreign Ministry.
