Lavrov: Italy is increasingly expressed dissatisfaction with the sanctions against Russia

Лавров: Италия все активнее выражает недовольство санкциями против России

Public opinion in Italy is increasingly in favour of the return of bilateral relations with Russia on a trajectory of growth, expressing dissatisfaction with the sanctions policy, said the Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“We see that political, business and public circles of Italy are increasingly expressing dissatisfaction with the sanctions policy, in favour of the return of bilateral relations on the growth trajectory. Know that the sentiment in favor of unblocking trade and economic ties with Russia are strong and in the Italian regions — in several Italian regions adopted resolutions call for the lifting of anti — Russian sanctions,” Lavrov said in an interview published on the website of the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera”.

The Minister expressed the hope that Rome will build relations with Moscow on the basis primarily of their own interests. “All the rich history of Russian-Italian ties, which are based on the years of experience of fruitful cooperation, is an example of what joint efforts we managed to achieve significant results,” he said.

Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated in connection with the situation in Ukraine. The EU first imposed individual sanctions against individuals, and then the sectoral restrictive measures that affect whole sectors of the economy. In response, Russia restricted imports of food products from EU countries.

Since then, the EU sanctions has been regularly extended, most recently until the end of January 2017. Condition for their withdrawal in the EU called the full implementation of the agreements on settling the situation in Ukraine.

In recent years a strong unity on the renewal of restrictive measures against Russia in the European Union is not observed. A number of EU countries such as Greece, Italy, Spain, Finland, Hungary, expressed the opinion that inappropriate sanctions. About the harmfulness of mutual economic constraints are always talking and representatives of the European business.
