UNESCO has included yoga in the list of intangible cultural heritage

ЮНЕСКО внесла йогу в список нематериального культурного наследия

The UNESCO has put yoga on the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity, said foreign Ministry spokesman of India Vikas Swarup.

“A diplomatic victory of India was that the intergovernmental Committee for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage introduced yoga in the UNESCO list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity,” Swarup said at a weekly briefing in new Delhi.

According to him, the decision was supported unanimously by the 24 members of the Committee, who thus reversed the decision of the expert technical group’s recommendation to postpone the decision of the question at the next session of the Committee in 2017. Swarup noted that the inclusion and classification of yoga as “heritage of humanity” is a recognition of yoga.

“This highlights the role of yoga as a social practice, oral tradition and system of ancient and scientific knowledge that contribute to harmony and peace between castes, creeds, sexes and nationalities”, — said the diplomat.

He also added that the recognition of yoga by UNESCO would help to attract more attention to the relevant institutions in India. It also “may potentially encourage a dialogue on the ideas of peace and tolerance, it can be extended to achieve the goals of sustainable development”.
