. The Director of the program on the study of man in NASA William paloschi told how the cooperation of NASA and Institute of biomedical problems RAS will help US prepare for missions to Mars and life on a moon base, and how you can change cooperation of Russia and USA in space by Donald trump.

“The program of cooperation with NASA, has been discussed and we are now preparing for the signing of an agreement to conduct a joint research program. Next year we will hold a short joint experiment, 14-day isolation, which will help us to work out the interaction and solve scientific problems,” said Oleg Orlov, Director of the Institute of biomedical problems, Russian Academy of Sciences.

This week, the Institute of biomedical problems of RAS held an international conference on space biology and medicine, which were not only Russian scientists, but the official representatives of NASA, including William paloschi (William Paloski).

They said that NASA and IBMP are preparing to sign an agreement on close cooperation. According to preliminary plans, scientists and NASA officials will participate in the isolation experiments on the basis of the module of the project Mars-500 in 2017 — 2018, and experts IBMP will participate in similar experiments in the isolation system to NASA.

Besides, as has told RIA “news” the Director of the Institute, the projects can join the Japanese space Agency JAXA and other foreign partners. The availability of such plans from JAXA confirmed, Atsuhiko Ogata (Ogata Otsuhiko), the official representative of the Japanese Agency. According to him, the IBMP allow the participation of a Japanese volunteer in all subsequent isolation experiments.

In addition, IBMP and NASA plan to continue cooperation in the field of space medicine and biology, as well as joint participation in projects to study the life of mice and other animals on Board the ISS and Russian biosatellites. In the summer of 2017 to the ISS, in particular, will be sent a new batch of mice, who will follow the Russian and American specialists. It is planned that for the first time in the history of such experiments, the mouse will return back to Earth alive.

We reached consensus in the sense that they are ready to move forward. While there is no specific agreement, which spelled out the obligations of each party, but we have a full understanding about what we want to achieve.

Today we discussed and agreed to hold a set of isolated experiments and coordinated experiments that we conduct in ground experimental complex of the Institute of biomedical problems (established for the program “Mars-500”).

— Your colleague Ranita Cromwell yesterday told us that such experiments will be possible thanks to the fact that NASA has not stopped cooperation with Russia in the field of the ISS operation, in contrast to other areas of space exploration. Whether so it actually?

— Yes, indeed, we – both Russia and the US – are very interested in space exploration, and the ISS helps us to achieve these goals. But an important element in the work station and the research that we conduct on Board, and ground-based experiments. It concerns including isolated experiments, such as those that the IBMP conducts the NEC.

Such experiments are extremely important for understanding what it feels like and what happens to his body during long-term missions aboard the station – as you know, Scott Kelly just returned from a year-long “business” trip to the ISS in the future we plan to hold several more such missions.

— How in General can influence political processes in Russia and the USA on cooperation opportunities in this field?

— Yes, today on NASA imposed certain restrictions on scientific cooperation with the Russian colleagues – at the moment, unfortunately, such interactions are limited to only projects that have a particular relevance to the ISS.

But I don’t think the emergence of new projects like our collaboration with the Institute of biomedical problems, will lead to the emergence of new political constraints that will hinder our work. The only thing to say now – current measures to limit the scope of our cooperation, but nothing more.

— How will affect or have already affected the election Donald trump President of the United States? Whether this will lead to a reduction in cooperation between Russia and the United States?

— At the moment to say anything definite is extremely difficult. The administration trump has just started developing, and while its representatives were not contacted NASA and have not announced their plans for reforming the Agency. I expect that this will happen soon and they will tell you what will focus the attention of new U.S. President.

We expect that NASA will not change so many things – many of our goals are not the President and Congress, and we are moving on the current trajectory of space exploration and how it affects the person for a long time. I don’t know where will lead us Mr. trump, but he has already expressed interest in the study of space and so I think we will continue to move in the same direction. All will become clear in about six months, when the transition period ends.

Similar experiments and the data that we together will get them, will help us in preparing the expedition to Mars, and build bases on the moon, a lunar space station. When the experiments are complete, we will use the results obtained in the course of repeated experiments already aboard the ISS.

On the other hand, these studies help us in exploring our planet – for example, people live in similar conditions and in almost complete isolation at the Antarctic polar stations. And therefore, we are now systematically studying what happens in the isolation experiments, including the interactions between team members, what helps and hinders them as they interact with earth and how to solve these problems.

Of particular value to us is that we will be able to check in these experiments the delay in communication that would experience the expedition, travelling to Mars and other distant planets. Such experiments are impossible to conduct on the ISS – we’ve tried to do, but the real delay and the insulation crew is hard to recreate in a space station for a long time.

Given such ambitious plans, will you use elements of real systems NASA that are now being developed – for example, spaceship Orion and rocket SLS in the isolation experiments?

— No, we do not expect that something similar could happen in the near future. On the other hand, I believe that the results of isolated experiments will allow us to improve the projects to create environments of human habitation in deep space, are now created in NASA.

In the next decade we plan to establish a special housing unit on the Ground that will replicate its properties and design the systems that we send to Mars. It will also be insulating research involving American and foreign volunteers, and the results of these experiments will help us understand how much space does a person need for life in space, as well should be illuminated on the residential module and how it should be arranged and other important properties for comfortable living of future marsonautes.

Now none of this not ready yet, and our current collaborative projects are aimed at the more “common” problems associated with long term space exploration in principle.

In the famous novel and movie “the Martian”, the astronaut mark Watney spent several years in solitude on Mars. Does NASA conduct such insulation experiments?

No, of course we do not plan to conduct such research – we plan to hold the insulation experiments, which will involve small crews of 4-6 people who will be living on base for a long time. And the duration of the experiment, and the number of participants has to do with how we plan to carry out expeditions to Mars and the moon in the future.

Of course, the idea that somebody would be left alone, is interesting in itself, however, is a completely different type of experiment that we plan to do on Earth and not planning to test on other planets. The case of Mark Watney is an interesting literary story, but not what we would like to experience the hard way.
