Jagland discussed with Putin on the theme of sport and the upcoming summit of the Council of Europe

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe thorbjørn Jagland said that during the meeting on Tuesday with President Vladimir Putin touched on the subject of sports, as well as the upcoming summit of the Council.

“Discussed the work of the office (Council of Europe), a number of programmes for cooperation, including in the field of sports,” — said in an exclusive interview with RIA Novosti, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

“He (Putin) mentioned the importance of legislative instruments in this area, the anti-doping Convention (Council of Europe), the Convention to combat match-fixing,” said Jagland.

According to him, the sides also discussed the role of the Council of Europe in the field of refugee protection, particularly in the area of children’s rights.

“Touched on the Convention (on human rights), I asked him about his support for a summit of the Council of Europe in 2019,” — said Jagland. “We agreed that everything must be done to protect the Convention,” he added.

Answering the question, discussed during the meeting, the issue of relationship Russian side with the parliamentary Assembly, Jagland said: “No! Not with President Putin”.
