The Supreme court of Karelia upheld the ruling of the lower court on the appointment of local religious organization “Jehovah’s Witnesses “Kostomuksha” 50 thousand rubles fine for possession of extremist materials, said on Thursday the Republican Prosecutor’s office.

“The decision of the Supreme court of the Republic of Karelia… upheld the ruling of the Kostomuksha town court of 7 October 2016, which the local religious organization “Jehovah’s Witnesses “Kostomuksha” brought to administrative responsibility for an offence provided for in article 20.29 code of the Russian Federation about administrative offences, to a fine in the amount of 50 000 rubles with confiscation of extremist materials”, — stated in the message.

It clarifies the Supervisory authority, the arguments of the representatives of “Jehovah’s Witnesses” about the absence of an administrative offense “declared insolvent”.

An administrative case was initiated by the Prosecutor’s office Kostomuksha at the end of July on the basis of the revealed fact of storage of the local religious organization “Jehovah’s Witnesses” literature included in the Federal list of extremist materials.

The organization “Jehovah’s Witnesses” regularly becomes the object of attention of Supervisory authorities in all regions of Russia. In particular, in February 2016, the Belgorod regional court at the request of the Prosecutor’s office decided to eliminate the offices of “Jehovah’s Witnesses” in Stary Oskol and Belgorod, recognizing them as an extremist. In June, the armed forces upheld the elimination of the Belgorod branch of the “Jehovah’s Witnesses” and branches in Stary Oskol.
