The number of orphans in Moscow for the last six years has halved, according to a statement on the official website of the mayor of the capital.

The mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin visited a centre for the promotion of family education «Our house» in the area of Filyovsky Park and promised to provide all possible: «and the rest, and rehabilitation, and sport and getting a normal education.»

«From 2011 to 2016 in Moscow, the number of orphans and children left without parental care living in families increased by 48% (1 January 2011 — 12665 children, on December 22, 2016 — 18734). The number of orphans living in orphanages has decreased by more than two times — from 4371 to 1919 children», — stated in the message.

It is noted that in families brought up 91 percent of the Moscow orphans. The share of children living in boarding schools in six years, declined from 25.7% to 9%. Also six years on the education in the family gave 608 of disabled children and 1070 of older orphans. In the capital gradually reduced the number of newly identified orphans and children left without parental care, 2860 children in 2010 to 1639 in the current.

Emphasizes that this became possible thanks to the device of children-orphans in foster families and the prevention of child abandonment. It includes early detection of dysfunctional families and provide them with assistance, continued work with a dysfunctional family in cases of deprivation of parental rights if there is a chance to restore the status of the parents, the transformation of children’s homes into centres of family assistance, search and training of citizens who wish to take the child to education, increasing social benefits and outreach activities.
