The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill on Saturday night will make a new year’s prayer in the Metropolitan Cathedral Church of Christ the Savior.

During the service, which will start at 19.00 GMT, will be proclaiming special petition to the world. Christmas prayers take place in these pre-holiday days in all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church.

New year’s prayer (or «prayer service on Rosh Hashanah is») is a special service, when believers thank God for mercy in the past year and seek blessings for the coming year for yourself, your family and the Fatherland.

Most of the followers of other traditional religions of Russia (Islam, Judaism and Buddhism) also, as usual, will lift up prayers for the welfare of their loved ones and homeland in the New year. Catholics during the last worship of the year traditionally sing an ancient hymn Te Deum («Thee, God, we praise») in gratitude to God for his blessings.

On the new year night in dozens of churches in Moscow and St. Petersburg will be held at the newly established tradition, a night of worship. Also, since this year New year falls on a Sunday, in all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church on Saturday evening and Sunday morning will be the festive service — Vespers of the vigil and the Liturgy.

According to the Patriarchal press service, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church on the morning of 1 January will make the consecration of the Moscow Cathedral of the Dormition on the’tsy and the divine Liturgy in it.
