The transit of Russian gas through Ukraine from December 22 fell by 19% due to increased deliveries via the Nord stream to the German gas pipeline Opal, said «Naftogaz».

The Ukrainian company said, citing data from the European network of gas transmission system operators (ENTSOG) that «Gazprom» has essentially increased the volumes of gas transit through «Nord stream».

«Almost all of the additional volumes passed through the Opal pipeline. The volume of transit through Ukraine during this time decreased significantly, and the daily total volume of gas supplies to Europe by two routes is not actually changed,» — said in the message.

According to the data, shipments via Nord stream into Opal grew by 41%, while the volume of transporting gas to Slovakia via Ukraine decreased by 19%. Total supply for the two routes decreased by 2%.

In the «Naftogaz» stated that it «questioned» the assertion that the expansion of the access of Gazprom to Opal will not lead to a decrease in the volume of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.

The Opal pipeline in Germany is supplied Russian gas coming to Europe via the sea pipeline Nord stream, but due to the limitations of European regulators pipe loaded only partially. At the end of October the European Commission approved the extension of access of Russian companies to Opal.
