Dwarf planet 2007 OR10, the third largest object in the Kuiper belt after Pluto and Eris revolves around the Sun not alone but in the company of a small moon with a diameter of 250-350 kilometers, according to a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

«The opening of satellites of the big all known dwarf planets, except for Sedna, says that during the time of the birth of these celestial bodies, the collision between the «germ» of the planets was much more frequently than we thought. It changes our understanding of the formation of the Solar system and restricts the possible scenarios of her birth,» — says Csaba kiss (Csaba Kiss) from the Observatory of Cocoa (Hungary).

Dwarf planet 2007 OR10 was discovered in 2007, the well-known planetary scientists Megan Swab and Michael brown, and since it is quite a long time has been controversial among scientists because of the unusual red colour of its surface, explain that astronomers could not.

Just last year, kiss and his colleagues have found an explanation for this anomaly, finding that the size and weight 2007 OR10 been grossly underestimated. It turned out that she is the third of the size of the dwarf planet in the Solar system after Pluto and Eris with a diameter of approximately 1535 kilometres and a mass that is comparable to pluchinsky. 2007 OR10 is painted red for the same reasons that the Pluto – its surface is covered with «snow» of aromatic hydrocarbons resulting from decomposition of ethane and methane under the action of the rays of the Sun.

The scientific team, Kissa revealed another interesting detail in the life of this «sister of Pluto» is actually random, studying the pictures of the dwarf planets, recently obtained by means of a telescope «Kepler», periodically peering into the Solar system.

Following this idea, the astronomers analyzed archival photographs 2007 OR10 received «Hubble» and «Spitzer» in the last 10 years. To their surprise, they very quickly managed to find the moon 2007 OR10, which can be seen on several images from the Hubble space obtained in 2009 and 2010.

As the moon of Pluto, Makemake and Eris, 2007 OR10 companion, currently unnamed, has a fairly impressive size in comparison with its «big sister» – its diameter is about 250-350 kilometers, which is only 5-6 times smaller than the diameter of the dwarf planet itself.

The calculations of scientists show that it completes one revolution around 2007 OR10 for about 35 or 100 days, and probably always «looks» on the surface of the dwarf planet on one side, as earth’s Moon. Further observation of it, as I hope the authors will help you understand what it is, as it could be and why any large objects in the Kuiper belt whose diameter exceeds a thousand kilometers, have sufficiently large moons.
