The relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was brought to Moscow. In the temple of Christ the Savior, the Shrine was met by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill. To venerate the relics in Moscow will run until July 12.

That the relics of the revered Christian Saint to be delivered to Russia, Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis agreed during a historic meeting in Havana in February 2016. Before the relics of St. Nicholas never left the Italian town Bari where they are kept now 930 years.

Forensic experts have learned from the Shrine with the relics of the ninth rib of a Saint, which is right next to the heart, considered in Christian tradition as the place of concentration of faith. Edge has invested in a special ark, so called the reliquary.

The ark, decorated with gold leaf, covered with glass, through which believers are able to see the relic. Almost a thousand years before, the relic was kept hidden from human eyes, immured in a tomb of the lower Church of the Basilica, under a marble slab weighing over 30 tons.

The head of the Department for external Church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk and Archbishop of Bari, Francesco’s Cacucci signed a special agreement on the temporary transfer of part of the relics of the Saint. After that, the priests carried the ark of the Basilica into the square and placed on a special car, which headed to the airport. Watched the Shrine hundreds of people — residents of Bari and pilgrims from Russia.

At the airport «Vnukovo» the ark were met by the honor guard and the clergy and faithful with colors and icons. The whole ceremony was accompanied by worship.

Then the relics were moved to a bus that went to the temple of Christ the Savior. There they were met by the Patriarch. Shipping Shrine was marked by a solemn ringing of bells in the churches of the capital, including the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the bell tower of Ivan the Great in the Kremlin.

The temple can accommodate about 10 thousand people, was filled with believers. Many of the pilgrims came from other Russian regions and from neighboring countries where, as in Russia, especially revered Saint Nicholas.

In the capital on Saturday evening and on Sunday night will restrict movement: drive on Prechistenskaya embankment from the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour the Crimean bridge to the street Lenivka not be from 22.00 until six in the morning. The Moscow authorities assure that the city is ready to accept any number of pilgrims, and predict that the queue to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour will stretch for about two kilometres before the Crimean bridge. Therefore, pilgrims wishing to venerate the relics of Saint Nicholas will have to reach at metro station «culture Park» (ring or radial). Then you walk to the Prechistenskaya embankment (near Krymsky bridge) where you can get in line.

In the case of a large number of applicants the place will be extended along the embankment towards the Luzhniki stadium – then will have to go to the «Frunzenskaya» or even «Sparrow hills», about which the organizers will inform online.

On the thirteenth of July the relics will be transported to St. Petersburg, where they will stay until 28 July at the Alexander Nevsky monastery.

A unique event

The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill has called bringing in the Russian Orthodox Church the relics of St. Nicholas «truly unique event».

«The Saint and miracle-worker Nicholas, in terms of popular veneration in Russia was and remains the early saints. Almost all the houses both in the past and in many homes of Orthodox people today have three icons: the Savior, the mother of God and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker», — said the Patriarch, encountering the reliquary.

According to him, this worship is connected with many miracles in people’s lives through the prayers to this Saint, «the deliverance of the Fatherland and our people from many historic catastrophes.»

«That is why the Russian flock is the flock, filled with great love for the Holy Hierarch and Wonderworker Nicholas. That’s why in our minds it is perceived as a Russian Saint, though he never was in Russia and not by nationality or culture have never been associated with our country», — said the Patriarch.

He stressed that today the very necessary presence of St. Nicholas, not only in our people preserved faith, but also to eternal divine truth did not leave the modern life».

Saint Nicholas

Nicholas, who is also called Nicholas lived in the fourth century in Asia Minor (now territory of Turkey), he was a priest and then Archbishop of Myra city of Lycia. The tradition of the Church bears witness to the numerous miracles performed by the Saint, and his extraordinary mercy.

On the Church calendar, celebrations in his honor are performed twice a year: December 19 — the day of death and on may 22 in memory of the relics from Myra to the Bar (Bari). In people, these holidays are referred to as «Nikola winter» and «summer Nicholas».
