Researchers from the biological Department of MSU named after M. V. Lomonosov as part of an international group of scientists have discovered and described a new species of stenolaemata chesnochnitse — of frogs living in the mountainous forests of South Vietnam. New species was given the name «FINA» (Ophryophryne elfina) — the name of the fabulous forest creatures. Article with description of the species published in the journal ZooKeys.
The spadefoot toad gets its name from the fact that in case of danger emit a sharp garlic odor to scare enemies. Scientists thought that the appearance and unusual habitat make an open species of frogs gives them a resemblance to elves.© Photo : N. The outgrowths over the eyes, like small horns, and reddish-orange bumps on the skin, folding into intricate patterns, making Ophryophryne elfina similar to fairy tale characters. Themselves frogs are very small – their body length does not exceed 3 cm spadefoot toad were discovered in the unique subtropical evergreen mountain forests of the plateau Langebaan (South Vietnam) at a height of 700 to 2200 m above sea level. Even in the scientific literature, these forests are called elven: due to the constant fumes they usually shrouded in mist, the trees in them is low, thickly covered with moss.

Scientists have described Ophryophryne elfina in comparison with other types of stenolaemata chesnochnitsu: Ophryophryne gerti Ophryophryne synoria and. Studies have shown genetic differences between species. Scientists also described superficial differences, the structure of frogs and recorded the sound of their voices. It turned out that the mating songs of the males Ophryophryne South Vietnam resemble a bird whistle, which is different from the representatives of described species in the volume, the pitch, the duration of the «call» and the number of repetitions of a series. In the highland forests of Viet Nam found similar to elves© East News / Solent NewsТропические spiders large planowanie note that the existence of a newly described species of Ophryophryne elfina and other stenolaemata of chesnochnitse depend on intact evergreen moist deciduous forests and clean mountain streams where these frogs breed. The study says that today the size and dynamics of populations of frogs of this species and habitat is not yet exactly defined. Therefore, the authors recommend making the described form of «elven frogs» in the Red list of the International Union for conservation of nature as threatened until then, until you collect additional information about their lives.
