Russia and Cyprus managed to maintain close bilateral relations despite the anti-Russian EU sanctions and the falling ruble, said to RIA Novosti, the Minister of energy, Commerce, industry and tourism of Cyprus Giorgos Lakkotripis.

«Business between Cyprus and Russia found a way to continue. We have a lot of Russian companies whose European offices are located here in Cyprus. Despite the recession, which can be seen in the relations between the EU and Russia, Cyprus and Russia could work together,» — said Lakkotripis.

The Minister mentioned the impact of sanctions on the export of Cypriot agricultural products to Russia.

«Agricultural production is affected greatly. From the first days of the sanctions, we lost the opportunity to send agricultural products for export, in particular demand in Russia. In comparison with the size of the economy it’s not a big number, but for Cyprus it was noticeable,» he added.

Lakkotripis stressed that in 2015 the country’s tourism suffered greatly in light of the fact that fewer Russian tourists began to visit Cyprus due to the exchange rate of the ruble.

Earlier, the Minister of foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov at the meeting with the foreign Minister of Cyprus Ioannis Kasoulides said that relations between Russia and Cyprus are developing in all directions without exception — political dialogue, investment cooperation, inter-parliamentary ties.
