. About 2.5 thousand inhabitants of Udmurtia came to say goodbye in Izhevsk ex-head of the Republic Alexander Volkov, who died after a long illness in Germany, told RIA Novosti the representative of the press service of the head region.

Volkov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on science, education and culture of the Federation Council, has worked as a President of the Udmurt Republic from 2000 to 2014, died on may 20 in Germany after a long illness. The government of Udmurtia have announced mourning in the region on may 24.

«The ceremony of farewell and a memorial service was held in the St. Michael Cathedral in Izhevsk. According to the interior Ministry in the Church to say goodbye to the first President of Udmurt Republic Alexander Alexandrovich Volkov came 2.5 thousand people,» — said the Agency interlocutor.

With the words of condolences to the family and friends of Volkova at the funeral service were made by the acting head of Udmurtia Alexander Brechalov and representatives of the government of the Republic.

«I had a chance to meet him, and unfortunately, it was only two meetings. But even that was enough to understand that he gave himself without reserve to serving the people, serve the country. You know, I’m sure he was a happy man. And not only because he was surrounded by friends and family loving people. He was happy because he managed to do very much – what will be for many years to serve the people. This is true happiness: looking back at the traversed path, to see temples, mosques, kindergartens, schools. And most importantly – to see the people he helped. The bright memory of the first President of the Udmurt Republic, a patriot who sincerely loves people and their land,» — said in a farewell address Brechalov.

Alexander Volkov Khokhryakovskiy will be buried in the cemetery of Izhevsk.
