Putin: unification of RPTS and ROCOR was not easy, but this path is passed with dignity

The roots of the former division of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the Russian Orthodox Church outside of Russia (ROCOR), leaving the drama of the civil war, but both churches, in a sincere effort to strengthen homeland, survived a difficult path to the revival of integrity, said the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.

The ROCA appeared in 1920-ies and joined emigrated or found themselves in exile after the revolution of 1917 and the civil war in Russia the part of the clergy. The seventeenth of may 2007, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II and the first Hierarch of ROCOR Metropolitan Laurus signed in the Russian capital the Act of canonical communion of the Russian Orthodox Church and ROCOR, ROCOR has made a self-governing part of the ROC.

«The way to revival of the Church’s integrity, to unite the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church abroad was not easy. Otherwise, it could not be. Over the years of disunity, rooted in the drama of a fratricidal civil war, there are too many contradictions and mutual distrust. But both churches, in a sincere effort to strengthen Orthodoxy, strengthening of our common homeland, managed to pass this way», — Putin said at the solemn ceremony of consecration of a new temple at the Sretensky monastery in Moscow.

He added that the Russian Orthodox Church in Russia is «suffering, suffering enormous losses, it was always with the people».

«And the Russian Orthodox Church abroad has always helped our compatriots away from home, not only to keep the faith, but also to feel a close connection with the homeland, Russia, with its traditions, language and our culture. And restoration of unity has strengthened this connection. It was and remains an event of great moral sound, a symbol of reconciliation, symbol and example of what the history of our country, her past can and should not divide but unite us all,» the President added.
