Traditionally the birthday of the «sun of Russian poetry» — may 26, old style — in the State Museum of A. S. Pushkin award the winners of the New Pushkin prize. This year the prize «For total creative contribution to Russian culture» is produced, the artist Boris Messerer and poet Ivan Zhdanov. The size of the monetary prize of 200 thousand rubles. This year the winners also awarded grants for two-week stay in reserve «Mikhailovskoye».

Outstanding theatrical artist, the set designer of more than 150 performances, Boris Messerer — the son of actress anel, Sudakevich and the Bolshoi theater’s ballet Asaf Messerer, husband of the poetess Bella Akhmadulina. In 2016 came the memoirs Messerer «Promelec Bella. A romantic chronicle», highly appreciated by literary critics.

In the post-Soviet time there appeared the idea to revive the award on the eve of the 200th anniversary of Pushkin. First it took fond a German businessman Alfred Toepfer. In parallel was established by the state Pushkin prize. However, in 2005, both awards ceased to exist.

So the tradition is not interrupted, the Fund of Alexander Zhukov, the State Pushkin Museum and the Museum-reserve «Mikhailovskoye» established a New Pushkin prize. For 136 years the awards it received all sorts of people — from members of the Royal family to Nobel laureates.

In the spring of 1901, Ivan Bunin turned to Anton Chekhov with a request to nominate his poem on Pushkin prize competition. Chekhov himself received this award in 1888, although did not make to this effort. He agreed to help a colleague and sent works of Bunin before the Commission. The opinions of the reviewers went. In the end, on the ballot in October 1903 Bunin received eight votes to three.

In 1909 the writer was once again honored with the honorary award, along with Alexander Kuprin. This time the reviewer was made by the Grand Duke Konstantin Romanov. In addition to the honorary title and money, the winner was presented the Pushkin medal. On one side there is a profile of the poet, and the other was a lyre, and Pushkin’s famous line: «the Soul of a cherished lyre my ashes will survive». Unfortunately, the medals were stolen from Bunin in Sofia after the evacuation from Odessa in 1920.

Prose writer Andrey Bitov became the first winner of the German Pushkin prize, which stood at that time, 40 thousand marks, in perestroika 1989. It is symbolic that for 10 years before Bits published in the U.S. the novel «Pushkin house».

A graduate of the geological Department, Bits often called himself a professional writer. The award was the first sign of new opportunities for the author whose works were not appreciated by the Soviet censorship. After the Fund’s Executive Bitove was first awarded prestigious awards both in Europe and at home. Today, being a classic of Russian literature, he chairs the Board of the New Pushkin prize, which is without competition and the jury determines the winners.

Known performances at the Polytechnic Museum together with the other idols of the «thaw» — Yevtushenko, Voznesensky and Christmas, Akhmadulina thus considered himself as a successor of the works of the poets of the «Golden age». The legacy of Pushkin and Lermontov took in her work a special place. The poet wrote several essays about his great «teachers».

The tradition of continuity in the literature in an interesting way reflected in the lives of families Akhmadulina. For almost 40 years the poet lived with her fourth husband — a theater artist Boris Messerer. Last year he published voluminous memoirs, devoted wife, and now receives the New Pushkin prize.
