Polls: 80% of Russians support the idea of bringing relics of saints to worship

The majority of Russians (83%) have a positive attitude to the setting to worship the relics of saints brought from other countries, believing that so the relics are becoming more accessible to those people who are unable to travel abroad, it follows from the results of a survey conducted by the all-Russia centre of studying of public opinion (VTSIOM).

The relics of St. Nicholas, stored in Italian Bari for the first time in history brought to Russia. With may 21, they are in the temple of Christ the Savior. 22 may from 13.00 to him opened free access for pilgrims. Access to the relics is open daily until 12 July from 8.00 to 21.00. Earlier in the press service of the Central district of Regardie told RIA Novosti that more than 80 thousand people came to venerate the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the first five days of stay of the Shrine in Moscow.

According to the survey, «the precedents of export of relics and the relics of saints from other countries to worship with believers in our society are regarded with approval and understanding: support such initiatives 83% of Russians». The main argument of supporters is that the Shrine more accessible for those who for whatever reason cannot go abroad. Only 11% of respondents spoke against, explaining that «shrines don’t need to worry, transporting from one place to another».

It is noted that 81% of Russians know that on Monday in Moscow in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to worship are exhibited the relics of Saint Nicholas. According to sociologists, 52% answered that «I know this», and 29% had heard something, but do not know the details. Only 18% of respondents indicated that they hear about it the first time.

Two-thirds want to venerate the relics

The desire to venerate the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker expressed more than two-thirds of respondents to the survey. So, 72% would like to venerate the relics. Answering the question of why they want to see the relics of Saint Nicholas, 23% said they would ask health and deliverance from disease, and 18% for the reason that they believe in shrines.

«The interest and respect are evidence of the degree of waterquantity Russians, but also the desire to unite around the values that underlie the Christian doctrine. The worship of relics is an expression of respect to the spiritual heroism of the Saint and the treatment in the hope to help. Obviously, this event will be one of the most important this year,» commented the data of the survey practice leader for political analysis and consulting VTSIOM Mikhail Mamonov.

Poll «polls-Sputnik» held on 23-24 may 2017, among Russians at the age from 18 years. Survey method — telephone interviews in a stratified random sample of dibasic landline and mobile numbers with a volume of 1,200 respondents.
