In the laboratories of Tomsk Polytechnic University have developed new polymeric materials that possess high frost resistance and impact strength. Compared with conventional materials, such as ABS plastic and polypropylene, created materials retain flexibility and not become brittle at temperatures considerably below zero.
«The toughness of composites based on polymers at low temperatures does not change, while the conventional plastics in the cold will stay fragile and under the action of shock loads are destroyed», — said the Professor of chair of technology of organic substances and polymer materials TPU Alexey Lyapkov. Tests showed that the polymers retain their characteristics at temperatures down to -60 °C.

«Based on our polymers to create a variety of composite and reinforced materials that can acquire new properties, such as thermal and electrical conductivity, low density, higher strength, — said Alexey Lyapkov. In the future we plan to continue to develop fundamentally new polymers. On the basis of them it will be possible to produce polymeric membranes with adjustable pore size. They are necessary in the production of special filters for chemical industry and medicine, and also used in the analytical devices».
