Now is a good moment for dialogue between Spain and Russia, despite disagreements, said in an interview with RIA Novosti, Ambassador of Spain in Russia, Ignacio ybáñez.

«Now is a good time. I think that the relationship with Russia is very important, Russia is a great European country. In the political sense, we have good bilateral relations. However, there are issues on which we disagree. First and foremost is the theme of the Crimea and the situation in the East of Ukraine, in which Spain, like other European countries, a clear position,» Ibanez admitted. In particular, according to the Ambassador, Spain did not recognize the annexation of Crimea, and calls on all parties to implement the Minsk agreements.

However, despite differences, «there are so many other themes on which to engage in dialogue». «We must work with Russia, we believe that, from a political point of view, now is a good time. We must continue to make efforts to bring our positions closer together on issues where there is disagreement, and where they are not – and these are many – to work together,» added Ibanez.

According to the Ambassador, it is first necessary to develop economic cooperation. «Now is a good time to make the effort. I think there is a desire from both sides – from both Russia and Spain, the EU is to continue to move forward together,» he said.

According to the Ambassador, the upcoming June 6 and 7 visit to Moscow of foreign Minister of Spain Alfonso Dastis, «one of the first foreign visits» by the Spanish Minister, maybe a lot to promote dialogue between countries, especially as this year marks the 40th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations.

Monday will be a meeting of the intergovernmental mixed Russian-Spanish Commission on economic and industrial cooperation, in which will participate the energy Ministers of the two countries, Alexander Novak and Alvaro Nadal, and will also host a business forum with the participation of major companies such as Repsol and Gas Natural Fenosa.
