The head of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of trying to «kidnap in the Russian history» Princess Anna Yaroslavna.

Speaking on Monday at a press conference after talks with his French counterpart, Putin noted that the history of Russian-French relations has deep roots. In particular, he recalled, the youngest daughter of Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise Anna was the wife of Henry I, and made a significant contribution to the development of France, being one of the founders of at least two European dynasties of the Bourbons and Valois, one of which still reigns in Spain.

«Historically, we had her (of Europe — ed.) and, by the way, since the old Ukrainian Prince Yaroslav the Wise and his daughter from Kiev Anna Yaroslavna that just yesterday, Putin tried in the eyes of the majority of Europe in the Russian history», — said Poroshenko in his address to the Ukrainian people on the occasion of completion by the Netherlands of the ratification process of the Association agreement of Ukraine with the EU.

The words of the President of Russia that Anne of Kiev was a Russian Princess, has caused outrage among Ukrainian politicians, the President has been accused of trying to encroach on «Ukrainian deep historical European roots and to ascribe to themselves».

Anne of Kiev (born in different sources in 1032 or 1036) was the youngest of three daughters of Yaroslav the Wise, Prince of Rostov (987-1010 years), Novgorod (1010-1034 years) and Kiev (1016-1018 and 1019-1054 years).
