The scientists of far Eastern Federal University and far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered a new property of vortex laser pulses to create metal nanogl. The revealed effect can be used to increase the volume of information by laser recording and increase the speed of data transmission in information systems. The study is published in a series of articles in prestigious scientific journals Optics Express, Applied Physics Letters, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.

As reported by researcher of the Department of theoretical and nuclear physics School of natural Sciences FEFU Alexander Kuchmiak, a group of scientists FEFU and Feb RAS conducted a series of experiments on microscopic print on metallic films of gold and silver optical vortices — a special laser pulses. Under the influence of the laser on the surface of the films appeared conical shape with the base size less than 1 micron and the thickness of the «edge» of 10 to 20 nanometers.

Thus, the resulting metal nano was spun in the direction of rotation of the illuminating optical vortex.

«An optical vortex — one of the most interesting types of laser beams. The peculiarity is that its wave front propagating in space rotates like a drill. When exposed to a metal foil it melts it at the point of momentum and pull out a microscopic needle, twist in the direction of rotation of the vortex. Study of physical properties of this process, we have dedicated a special study,» — said Alexander Kuchmiak.
