Medvedchuk: the course of Kiev to join NATO is unacceptable to residents of Donbass

The policy of the Ukrainian authorities to join NATO is absolutely unacceptable for the people of Donbass, it can cause the escalation of the conflict, the leader of movement «the Ukrainian choice — the right of the people», the representative of Kiev in the humanitarian sub-group on Donbass Viktor Medvedchuk.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Thursday adopted a law which proposes to amend the law «On foundations of domestic and foreign policy» and provide it that «the basic principles of foreign policy are the strengthening of cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization with the aim of acquiring membership in this organization.»

«The policy of joining NATO is absolutely unacceptable to the residents of Donbass Euro-Atlantic integration is not a civilizational choice of Ukraine, as we are told, and the path that leads to the final loss of sovereignty», — wrote the Medvedchuk on Thursday in his blog on the website of the movement.

The politician is convinced that the decision of the Ukrainian authorities will not only be a stumbling block on the path to restore the territorial integrity of the country, but the reason for the escalation of the conflict in the Donbass. According to him, the document consistent for nearly 27 years ago in the Declaration on state sovereignty of Ukraine intention to «become in the future a permanently neutral state that does not participate in military blocs».

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in December 2014, amended the two laws, abandoning non-aligned status of the state. The new military doctrine of the country stipulates the renewal rate in NATO: Ukraine by 2020 to ensure full compatibility of its armed forces with those of NATO countries. In mid-December 2015 during the visit of President Petro Poroshenko in Brussels signed the «road map» between Ukraine and NATO on military-technical cooperation.

Earlier, former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that joining the Alliance Ukraine will need to meet some criteria, the implementation of which will take a lot of time. Experts believe that Kiev will not be able to apply for membership in NATO in the next 20 years.
