UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova condemned the murder of Russian journalist Dmitry Popkov, which occurred on may 24 and urged the Russian authorities to bring those responsible to justice.

The body of 42-year-old editor-in-chief of the newspaper «Ton-M» Dmitry Popkov with gunshot wounds was found on may 24 in the late evening in the city of Minusinsk of Krasnoyarsk region. The consequence considers various versions of murder, including connected with professional work of the victim.

«I condemn the murder of Dmitry Popkov and urge the competent authorities to prosecute the perpetrators of his murder,» — said in a statement released by the Director General of the organization.

Earlier, a similar statement was made by the Committee to protect journalists.
