Thirteen Philippine Marines were killed in fighting with Islamist militants in an attempt to free the captured city of Marawi, reports Agence France Presse with reference to the military representative Lieutenant Colonel Joe Sara Herrera.

«We are saddened by the result — Thirteen people were killed,» said Herrera.

The President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law in the southern province of Mindanao after fighting between the army and a group that supports a terrorist organization «Islamic state.»* Duterte noted that the military situation in Mindanao may last year. The main hot spot is the city of Marawi, in the battles for the capture of which was attended by about 500 fighters.
