Citizens of Ukraine in the night on Sunday will be eligible to travel to EU countries without visas. Ukraine took 10 years to complete the process of liberalization of the visa regime with the EU, Kiev authorities consider this step as a major victory of the country on the path of European integration. President Petro Poroshenko called the EU’s decision on the abolition of visas «, «goodbye» Soviet and Russian empires.»

Ukrainian tour operators are expecting an increase in tourist flow of Ukrainians to Europe. At the same time, experts believe that due to the difficult economic situation not many Ukrainians will afford European travel.

On the background of the abolition of the visa regime with the EU, the number of political parties in Ukraine, talking about the need for the introduction of visas for Russia. Their initiatives, they explain the desire to «protect Europe» from Russia. Moscow has warned that Russia will take ‘mirror’ measures in the case of the introduction of Ukraine visas for Russians.

A long way

The dialogue between the EU and Ukraine on visa liberalisation was launched in 2008, and in November 2010, the EU offered Kiev the action plan for visa-free regime. The Parliament of Ukraine adopted all the required legislation and the European Commission in December 2015, has confirmed the fulfillment of all the conditions Kiev.

Originally expected Ukraine to get visa-free regime until the end of 2016, but Europe has repeatedly postponed the issue in connection with the need for harmonization of the mechanism for suspending the visa-free regime in case of problems with migration and security.

The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly stated that granting visa-free travel to Kiev evidence «of the correctness of the strategic» European choice irreversible course for integration to Europe.

«Ukraine back into the European family. Ukraine says final goodbye to Soviet and Russian empires», — said the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. According to him, Kiev is only in the framework of visa liberalization with the EU has held 144 of the reform, and assured that «Ukraine is absolutely determined to reform the country» in the future.

According to the head of the Ukrainian foreign Ministry Pavel Klimkin, the abolition of visas with the European Union is not a cause for celebration, and a signal for Ukraine to move on. In his opinion, now Ukraine must join the European Union and receive «all the benefits of the four freedoms.»

Visa-free regime implies the free movement in the Schengen zone, which includes 22 member countries of the EU and the four States not member of the EU (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) and four candidate countries for accession to the Schengen area (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania, Croatia).

The presence of Ukrainian citizens in the participating countries of the Schengen area will be allowed no more than 90 days within six months, to use the allowed days continuously is not required. Visa-free regime does not give permission to work and study in EU countries. The purpose of short-term visit may be tourism, business, participation in cultural activities, visiting friends and relatives. In March, the mechanism was adopted suspending the visa-free regime in case of uncontrolled influx of migrants, which the EU Council had announced that the conditions for cancellation of visas to citizens of Georgia and Ukraine.

However, Commissioner for neighbourhood policy and EU enlargement negotiations Johannes Hahn believes that Ukraine does not need to worry that visa-free regime with the EU could be suspended if the country will continue to move along the path of reform.

«We should not speculate concerning the use of the provisions on suspension of the visa-free regime. Now there is no any reasons for it. I hope they won’t but… If the reforms will continue to go on, I don’t think there are reasons on the application of the provisions on the suspension,» said Khan.

Passport is sufficient

To cross the border of the European Union, the Ukrainians only needed a biometric passport, without this document to enter the EU without a visa will not work. The border guards may request a number of additional documents, in particular the objectives of the trip and sufficiency funds for this. A tourist can also ask for a copy of a return ticket, reservation of hotel rooms and show cash or a statement from the Bank card.
