Russian energy Minister Alexander Novak discussed the meeting in Astana with the Vice-President of the European Commission on energy Union maroš Šefčovič the situation with transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, reported on the website of the Ministry of energy.

«The parties discussed cooperation between Russia and the EU in the energy sphere. In particular, they talked about the current situation with transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine. Despite the assurances of the Ukrainian side about the fact that European consumers will be guaranteed an uninterrupted supply of gas, and the guarantee of not seizure of transit volumes at JSC «Gazprom» continues to be unprecedented pressure on the part of national authorities of Ukraine», — stated in the message.

In addition, during the meeting the sides discussed the current situation with the gas pipeline «Nord stream-2», «Turkish stream» and Opal. The sides also discussed issues of functioning of energy systems through the electricity grid, BRELL (Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) and other aspects of bilateral cooperation.

Gazprom plans to build two new offshore pipeline to Europe under the Baltic and Black seas. Question on the conclusion with Ukraine of a new transit contract to replace the expiring in 2019 remains open. In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russian gas transit via Ukraine to the EU can survive after 2019, if it is economically feasible. The European Commission has repeatedly expressed concern that the gas pipeline «Nord stream-2», if built, would threaten Russian gas transit to the EU via Ukraine.
