Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has congratulated his compatriots with the introduction of a visa-free regime with the EU at a ceremony in Kiev, according to the website of the President.

Poroshenko saw symbolism in the fact that the introduction of «bezveze» with the EU took place on June 12 — Russia Day. «We are finally independent from each other — politically, economically, gas is energetically and spiritually,» — said the Ukrainian President.

According to the head of the state in connection with the introduction of a visa-free regime for Ukrainians smiled at fate, «which was the dream and which we fought for more than one generation of our ancestors.»

The Ukrainian President quoted verses of Lermontov’s «farewell, unwashed Russia, country of slaves, the country gentlemen. And you, blue uniforms, and you, his faithful people» and the excerpt from Pushkin’s poem «To Chaadaev»: «Comrade, believe, it will rise, captivating star of happiness, Russia vspryanet from sleep, and on the ruins of autocracy write our names.»

The document granting the citizens of Ukraine visa-free regime was signed by the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani and Minister of interior presidency of the EU Council of Malta Carmelo Abela on 17 may this year and comes into force on Sunday night.

The Ukrainians will have free access to the Schengen area for 90 days in tourist, business and family purposes. To cross the border of the European Union, citizens of Ukraine only needed a biometric passport.
