Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on the words of ex-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, comparing it with the head of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler, said that from the Russian side can also be different in comparing the activities of American politicians, but Moscow is trying to refrain from extreme statements.

«Nothing new for us in this. We know her personally. She is an energetic woman. We, too, could be all sorts of comparisons, but we are by virtue of the political culture refrain from extreme statements,» said Putin in an interview with Director Oliver stone in the film shown on television channel Showtime.

In March 2014, CNN reported that Clinton, speaking in the context of the Crimea, drew a parallel between Putin and Hitler. She argued that Putin’s words about the need to protect Russian resemble the actions of Hitler, who stated that the need to protect people with German roots living in Eastern Europe.

Crimea became a Russian region after held there in March 2014 referendum in which 96.77% of voters of the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% of residents of Sevastopol voted for joining Russian Federation. Crimean authorities held a referendum after a coup in Ukraine in February 2014.

Ukraine still considers Crimea its but temporarily occupied territory. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea democratically in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter voted for reunification with Russia. According to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the Crimea issue «is closed permanently.»
