Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is the only country where a former employee of U.S. intelligence Edward Snowden could be safe.

Meanwhile, Putin noted that he does not know how will the fate of the former NSA employee. «He is a brave man. And with character. I really don’t know how he will build his life», — Putin said in an interview with U.S. Director Oliver stone for the film, shown on Showtime.

In his opinion, Russia is now the only place where Snowden can be safe.

Snowden in June 2013 gave the Washington Post and the Guardian series of secret materials about the programs of surveillance of US intelligence and the UK on the Internet. He flew to Hong Kong and then to Moscow, where some time was in the transit area of Sheremetyevo airport.

Russia gave Snowden temporary asylum for one year on the condition that it will cease operations against the United States. In August 2014, Snowden received a three-year residence permit, which allows him to travel not only in Russia but also abroad. In January 2017, Snowden has been extended residence permits until 2020.
