Russia called for an Independent UN Commission to investigate violations of human rights in Syria to seriously address the problems of looting of historical and cultural heritage of the country by illegal armed groups.

This statement was made by a senior adviser, team leader for human rights and humanitarian Affairs permanent mission of the Russian Federation at the Geneva office of the UN Alexey Goltyaev in the discussion of the situation in Syria within the framework of the 35th session of the UN Council on human rights in Geneva.

«We urge the Commission to seriously address the issues of the atrocities of the jihadists against Christians and other religious minorities and their human rights consequences, and the looting of the Syrian territories with the direct participation of illegal armed groups, sponsored from abroad, deliberate destruction of critically important for the public infrastructure, including air strikes forces of the so-called anti-ISIS coalition, the ongoing removal of historic and cultural values and reselling them on the black market,» he said.

The goltyaev again criticized an Independent Commission of inquiry in Syria, saying that «in its work remain serious imbalances» because it pays attention only to «conviction of the legitimate government of Syria.»

The next, 35th session of the UN Council on human rights held in Geneva from 6 to 23 June.
