Erik Bulatov is one of the most famous contemporary Russian artists, whose paintings were seen, most likely, every. Bulatov is often called the founder of Sots art. His paintings are easily recognizable: it is a bright poster the inscription on the background scenery.

One of the recent and iconic works by the artist June 13 was given to the collection of the Tretyakov gallery. Painting «the Picture and the audience» was donated to the Museum Charity Fund of Vladimir Potanin.

We remembered the main Bulatov paintings from the Soviet period to the present day.

The book, designed by Erik Bulatov was held in the hands of, probably, every child. Illustrations for the tale «the Wonderful adventures of Nils» by Selma Lagerlof became canonical. Like many Soviet artists, along with great art, Bulatov was involved in «small» — designed children’s books.

The painting «glory to the CPSU» has entered into all fiction encyclopedia. In the early 1970-ies, Erik Bulatov began to develop a new style: he was putting on realistic landscapes of bright signs, borrowed from the ideological posters. At the same time he became interested in experiments with space.

The Painting, «Brezhnev. Soviet space» can be mistaken for a real ideological poster. However, the work was banned. «Political criticism in the paintings there is only need to show the abnormality to the life which was perceived by our consciousness as normal,» — said about this work of Bulatov.

With the Soviet theme Bulatov worked until 1991. Later switched to other subjects. In his painting «How do I know where», written in 2009, the letters are in black-and-white abstraction. The text is written at an angle, mimicking the rapid movement.

Spectators look at the audience looking at the picture. Bulatov likes to experiment with perception. Thus, it seeks to break the boundary between the real and the imaginary. According to the artist, on the canvas, «Painting the audience,» Christ comes out of the painting into reality, and the biblical event is moving closer to the present.
