The European Commission sends formal letters to the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary in the framework of the procedure which can lead to sanctions against the three countries in connection with the refusal to accept refugees, and in the course of a month awaiting a response from them, the statement said the EC.

The decision to start procedures to prevent violations of the laws of the EU was adopted on Tuesday.

«As announced yesterday in the 13th report on displacement and resettlement, since the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland has not taken action to fulfil their obligations, the Commission today decided to launch procedures to prevent violations and to send letters of formal notification of the three member countries», — said the EC.

Commenting on the decision, the representative of the EC Alexander Vintershtayn reported that the next step should be the response of Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. «When the member receives a letter, she responds. This is the beginning of the procedure. Member countries will answer us. In this case we are talking (about the response) within a month,» he told reporters.

Procedure prevent infringement takes place in several stages. If the Commission believes that the country violates the norms of the European Union, it is an official letter informs her about their claims. If the EU does not give a satisfactory response, the Commission issued a reasoned opinion on the matter. Then, if the state does not bring its policy in line with this conclusion within the EC period, may appeal to the Court of justice.
