U.S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson stated that unilateral sanctions against Russia less effective than multilateral.

At a hearing in the house of representatives, one of the legislators asked the Secretary of state why the US does not conduct more stringent sanctions policy.

«Sanctions is a very effective tool. But unilateral sanctions are not as effective as multilateral. And one of the challenges in front of me, if we think about additional sanctions, is how to bring our allies to the same position with us, so they took on the same responsibility,» said Tillerson.

The head of state urged to give the White house more flexibility in sanctions against Russia.

«I urge Congress that any legislation adopted allowed the President to modify the sanctions regime. We would like to ask about more flexibility, to increase the pressure when necessary but also have the opportunity for dialogue,» he said.

The Secretary of state said that Russian-American relations are at their lowest level since the cold war. «And they deteriorate,» he said. According to Tillerson, «the two great nuclear powers should not have such relations between them» and need to move to a new level.

Earlier it became known that the Democrats and Republicans in the Senate agreed on the introduction of new restrictions against Moscow. The new sanctions are considered in the form of amendments to the draft law on the measures against Iran, in which there is a provision that does not allow the President to reduce or cancel the measures without the approval of Parliament.

The vote will take place in the Senate on Thursday. After that, the bill still must be approved by the house of representatives, and then the document will go to the President for signature.

In Moscow said that the plans of U.S. senators threaten to turn into new sanctions the peak. And, as said press Secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov, «it is not our choice.»
