A package of Russian anti-terrorism laws are justified and necessary in the fight against terrorism, said Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with Director Oliver stone in the film shown on television channel Showtime.

A package of anti-terrorism laws signed by the President in July of 2016, requires operators and Internet companies for up to six months to store information about the content of the conversations and correspondence of the users, including photos, video and audio files to provide them on request of the security services. The rate of storage of user traffic shall enter into force from 1 July 2018.

«The law that we have adopted, implies a need for long preservation of information by companies engaged in Internet, communications, etc. In this essential, personal information may be received by the secret service or law enforcement only by court order. Such a law operates in the United States, Canada, Australia and many other countries,» Putin said.

The interview was recorded from July 2015 to February 2017.

The President noted that he considers it «reasonable and necessary in the fight against terrorism»: if the data is simply destroyed, then disappear any opportunity to work on the criminal elements.

«In Syria today, unfortunately for us, fighting on the side of the terrorists, on the side of the DAIS (ISIS, a group banned in Russia – ed.) and other terrorist organizations, 4.5 thousand citizens of Russia and 5 thousand at least of citizens of Central Asian States, former republics of the Soviet Union. So they have their contacts in Russia. Last year our special services have prevented 45 terrorist crimes», — stressed the head of state.
