The staff of the St. Petersburg Metropolitanate was happy to hear the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday supported the position of the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, told RIA Novosti the head of communications of the Archdiocese of Natalia Rodomanova.

During a straight line President Vladimir Putin supported the position of the St. Petersburg Metropolia, St. Isaac’s Cathedral was built as a temple, and therefore needs the Church to stay. The President assured that the Church will not lose its Museum functions, and noted that Isaac passed on the ROC is not in the property, and for temporary use. While Putin has called to depoliticize the situation around the Cathedral.

«In the Archdiocese are certainly welcome what was announced by the President on the issue of the status of St. Isaac’s Cathedral on a straight line in his hometown. The President approved the fact that the creation of Montferrand, was built as an Orthodox Church, first of all, should be a temple… We hope that after he heard the position of the President, the transfer of the Cathedral of Russian Orthodox Church will be realized. This is not only a question of the execution of Federal laws, but also historical justice, an important spiritual symbol,» said Rodomanova.

According to her, the Church has repeatedly stated that it does not claim that Isaac became her property. «The Cathedral was and remains the property of the state, as it was originally. In modern conditions of international law it is also reinforced by the fact that Isaac’s Cathedral is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site by UNESCO, and therefore, according to the security obligations of the state, may not be transferred to anyone in the property. The Museum’s educational function St. Isaac’s Cathedral will be preserved and will be developed,» — said the Agency interlocutor.
